Saigon Ports of Call: Port Name, Travel Distance & Useful Information

Shore excursions are sightseeing activities that cruise passengers can engage in while their ship is docked in a port for a day or two. The abundance of options can make it challenging to spend hours researching online to identify the most suitable tour operator or travel agent to facilitate a seamless, enjoyable experience. Hence, the pivotal question arises: how does one select a reliable tour operator that comprehends one’s expectations and effectively translates those aspirations into a reality?

Below are the distances from your port of call in Saigon to downtown/Saigon Opera House and the estimated travel time by private transportation. Please take careful note of the calculations to ensure your return time on the ship.

Cruise Ship To Vietnam

SAIGON SHORE TRIPS CO., LTD / YOUR TRUSTED LOCAL TOUR OPERATOR FOR SHORE EXCURSIONS & PRIVATE TOURS

A common complaint about cruise line shore excursions is that they often lack personalization. On larger ships, the average excursion group consists of around 30 to 50 people, making the experience feel more like mass travel. Passengers are typically given color-coded stickers to wear before being guided to a public area, where they wait to be escorted off the ship to rows of waiting buses. This type of experience can be off-putting for independent-minded travelers. However, the size and kind of shore excursions vary by cruise line.

At Saigon Shore Trips Co., Ltd, we tailor our shore excursions to your preferences for timing, pace, travel interests, and budget. Just share your preferences with us, and we will ensure every minute of your trip counts. Since 2000, we have organized hundreds of private trips for solo travelers, couples, groups of friends, and multi-generational families at different ports of call in Vietnam and Cambodia.

TIPS FROM OUR LOCAL TRAVEL EXPERTS

 I. Ports of Call: Name, Location & Departure Time

Remembering your cruise ship’s name and port of call is crucial before embarking on your shore excursion adventure. Consult with your ship’s captain or cruise staff, and consider carrying a map with notes to ensure a timely return to your boat and port. When booking your shore excursions with us, please share these details so we can tailor activities or tours that align with your sense of exploration and enhance your travel experience.

II. Bring Cash/Credit Card or Both?

We recommend that our guests bring cash and a credit card for convenience. It’s best to carry some USD for small purchases, such as drinks, snacks, and coffee, as well as tips for your tour guide and driver, if you are satisfied with their service. While credit cards are generally accepted, please note that they may not be accepted at small stalls or from street vendors.

III. Street Eats & Iced Drinks? Should or Shouldn’t?

To ensure you have an enjoyable trip with us, we recommend avoiding ice from unbranded coffee shops and local wet markets for your safety. While street food and market food may look appetizing with attractive decorations, we can’t guarantee that the local bacteria are familiar with your digestive system. Therefore, it’s best to steer clear of them. Please review your guide before trying local food to ensure a safe and pleasant shore excursion with us.

IV. Private Tour or Group Tour?

Private Tour: For those seeking flexibility and a deeper, more authentic travel experience, a private tour offers the perfect opportunity to explore at your own pace. With a dedicated guide and personalized transportation, you’ll connect meaningfully with your destination and immerse yourself in its culture.

While a private tour may cost more than a group tour, the incredible value you’ll gain makes it worthwhile. Enjoy hassle-free shore excursions and rich insights from your guide. You can customize your journey—extend your stay at places that captivate you, savor meals of your choice, and embrace the journey in a way that resonates with your spirit. A private tour empowers you to make unforgettable memories.

Group Tour: This shore excursion is perfect for those who cherish connecting with fellow travelers. Embrace the moments of camaraderie as you wait together to board the bus at each stop, sharing the journey with around 40 others. Enjoy the thrill of adventure while benefiting from the more affordable pricing that group tours provide compared to personalized or private options.

V. Street vendors / Shoe boys / Coconut guys

For shore excursion passengers, exploring a new destination is a thrilling and enriching experience, especially after a long journey to the city. The following insights from a local destination expert will guide you through this exciting adventure.

**Street Vendors:** As you gaze out the tour bus window, you’ll spot street vendors offering unique souvenirs that capture the spirit of your journey. Embrace the excitement of discovery, but remember to manage your time wisely; so much awaits you in this vibrant place. You’ll meet these vendors at each stop, showcasing their impressive sales skills and enticing you to negotiate prices.

Consulting with your guide, researching, and making thoughtful choices will enhance your experience. Remember that many items may be copies or replicas, so consider what you truly value. Embrace the art of bargaining as a skill to hone along the way. Once a purchase is made, returning it can be a challenge, and your guide may not be able to intervene. While some vendors may be assertive, this is rarely the norm. To preserve the joy of your adventure and sidestep potential frustrations, consider appreciating the city’s rich tapestry without engaging with the vendors.

**Shoe Shine Boys**: These boys carry small wooden boxes and eagerly approach to polish your shoes. They may jump into action, even when your boots look fine. It’s best to maintain your distance and confidently say “NO” from afar, taking charge of your choices. Remember, many cruise ship passengers can be easily identified and may end up paying $10 to $20, or even more, for a 15-minute shine, even though the cost is only about $2. By staying alert, you can avoid these common scams.

**Coconut Guy Scam**
In downtown, coconut vendors offer tourists the chance to pose with handlebars and wear a conical hat for a traditional Vietnamese photo. After having your picture taken, you’ll be expected to buy a coconut from them, which will cost you 10 to 20 times what a local would pay. Typically, a coconut costs about $1 for locals, so please check the price before you purchase and make sure you’re comfortable with what you’re paying.
